Figueroa Grand Slam Too Much for Bullfrogs
July 14, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Duluth, MN.- Jean Figueroa's (West Florida) grand slam in the second sunk the Bullfrogs (30-18/8-5) in game one against the Duluth Huskies (27-22/7-6) by a score of 5-3.
With Luke Lind (North Dakota State) pitching for the Bullfrogs, Logan Taylor (Louisville) and Robb Paller (Columbia) started off the first with back-to-back hits. Taylor laid down a bunt single, and Paller smoked a double off the right-field wall. A run scored on a Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) sacrifice-fly. It stood 1-0 Bullfrogs after one frame.
Lind began the game with a perfect first inning (including two strikeouts) but met trouble in the second when he allowed a leadoff single to Jimmy Heck (Minnesota-Duluth), hit Elijah Dilday (Nebraska), and walked Elliott Barzilli (TCU). With one out, he then allowed a grand slam to Jean Figueroa (West Florida) to right-center to make it 4-1 Duluth after two innings.
Daniel Hersey's Huskies tacked on another when Alex Greene (West Florida) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning with Jimmy Heck standing at the plate.
Green Bay slid back into the fold with a two-run sixth, taking advantage of a Heck error at second. After singles by Desi Ammons (Belmont) and Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne), a grounder off the bat of Ty Blankmeyer (St. John's) had Heck throw the ball into left field on an awkward throw, scoring one run. The second came through on a Logan Taylor 4-3 groundout.
But, three shutout innings with four strikeouts by Jordan Cummings (RHP/Winston Salem State) and Austin Carpenter (RHP/North Alabama), kept the score 5-3 until the end. Carpenter left Taylor at third with the tying run at the plate.
Luke Lind (1-1) suffered his first loss going 4IP/6H/5R(5ER)/4K-1BB, Josh McClaney (2-1) 2IP/2H/2R(1ER)/1K-0BB picked up the victory, and Austin Carpenter notched the save (8).
The Bullfrogs are back at it tomorrow for a 6:35PM first pitch from Wade Municipal Stadium. Parker Hamilton (Florida Gulf Coast) takes the mound to make his seventh start.
