Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (8-5, 28-20) were defeated by the La Crosse Loggers (8-7, 27-22) by a final score of 13-10 in the nightcap of Monday's double-header at the Duck Pond. Cameron Frost (Washington State) paced the Mallards lineup in the losing effort, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a triple. J.J. Gould (Jacksonville) produced his second home run in back-to-back days, additionally, while Ro Coleman (Vanderbilt) acquired three base knocks.
After plating a runner in the top of the first, the Loggers proceeded to score six more runners between the second and third frames, a span of time in which the Mallards mustered up five to give Madison a 7-5 deficit after three. The Mallards tacked on another run in the top of the fourth frame, which saw Coleman drive home Gould on an RBI triple to the right centerfield gap. Coleman's RBI trimmed La Crosse's lead to 7-6 heading into the top of the sixth.
The Loggers reclaimed control of the contest in the road half of the sixth, however, scoring five runs against the Mallards staff courtesy of three hits and a Mallards error in the field. Witnessing La Crosse score another in the top of the seventh, Madison responded with four runs across the final two innings of the contest before seeing their comeback hopes fall short with Jason Goldstein's (Illinois) strikeout looking with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
With the loss behind them, the Mallards will turn their attention toward a two-game road trip in Wisconsin Rapids. Game one of the two-game series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Witter Field on Tuesday. The Mallards will return to the Duck Pond on Thursday, July 16 against the Lakeshore Chinooks.
