Fightins tripped up in opener at Binghamton

(Binghamton, NY) - The Reading Fightin Phils (59-63) suffered their first loss to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (58-65) as they lost 5-3 on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Reading is now seven games behind Trenton with 17 games to play.

Fightin Phils starting pitcher Blake Quinn did not give up a hit in his AA debut on Friday night against the Rumble Ponies. He issued five walks and struck out two batters in three innings before passing the baseball to Jose Taveras. Taveras, who last pitched for Reading on June 1st, was greeted with a solo home run by Rumble Ponies first baseman Joey Terdoslavich. Binghamton would lead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Binghamton extended their lead to 2-0 off Taveras in the bottom of the fifth inning as Andrew Ely scored on a fielder's choice. Reading bounced back in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2 against Franklyn Kilome. Adam Haseley led off the inning with a home run then Cornelius Randolph scored on a sacrifice fly by Deivi Grullon.

The Rumble Ponies struck back in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored three runs off Aaron Brown (1-2) to take a 5-2 lead. Reading added a run off Stephen Villines (1-0) in the top of the eighth inning as Darick Hall hit a sacrifice fly for their third run of the game.

Joshua Torres got the save for Binghamton as he retired the side in the top of the ninth inning.
