Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa "" The Dubuque Fighting Saints set a franchise record for the most goals scored in a game, hit the mark for most goals scored in a period this season in the USHL, and the most goals scored in a game against an opponent (and the RoughRiders at the same time) this season in a 10-2 domination over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
Hunter Miska also tied Jacob Nehama's franchise single-season win record with 29 in Friday's win.
The Saints' six goals in the first period came on 16 shots on goal. Gordie Green, Michael O'Leary, Evan Smith, Casey Johnson, Zach Solow and Colin Theisen all scored in the first period. Hugh McGing responded when it was 4-0, but Dubuque continued to press, and press, and press some more. All except for Johnson's goal were scored right in and around the blue paint.
A goaltending leader in many different categories, Ben Blacker's night came to a close after 20 minutes of action, after being shelled in the first period. He was relieved by Zach LaRocque, who hadn't seen game action since early February.
Joey Keane scored the only marker of the second period to extend the Fighting Saints' lead to six. It was Keane's second goal of the season, and second in as many games, with a shot that was deflected en route to the goal.
Up by that much, they didn't stop. Nathan Sucese tallied early in the third period, cashing in on a rebound off of a Shane Kavanagh shot to make it 8-1. Brett Boeing's breakaway goal made it 9-2. And the cherry on top in the final minute, Sucese mashed home a puck in the slot to cap the scoring at 10-2.
Ross Colton once again cut the lead to six with a goal of his own off of a turnover, but that was all of the offense that the RoughRiders could muster.
Chances even went by the wayside in this one, a game in which 17 Fighting Saints players tallied at least a point. Boeing was unable to capitalize on a penalty shot opportunity early in the first period. Sucese had a clear-cut breakaway from his own blue line in the second period that was stymied. And yet, they were able to score on 10 of 37 shots, a 27% success rate.
All 12 games in this game came at even strength. All three power play opportunities went by the wayside. With Johnson's goal, the Fighting Saints now have 10 players with 10 or more goals on the season.
Up next for the Fighting Saints is a rematch with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at The Stable starting at 7:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 matinée in Green Bay on Sunday afternoon. Catch all of the action on the flagship station of the Fighting Saints, Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, FASTHockey.
