Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Lincoln, NE - Stefanos Lekkas stopped all 37 shots to earn his sixth career shutout as the Sioux Falls Stampede (29-24-4) blanked the Lincoln Stars (32-23-3) 2-0 Saturday night at The Ice Box. The win was the Herd's fourth straight and moved them into a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West with the Fargo Force with three games remaining in the regular season. Fargo plays at Sioux City on Sunday while the Herd host Des Moines on Tuesday before Sioux Falls and Fargo square off for the final two games of the regular season to determine who receives the final playoff berth.
Eric MacAdams and Josh Passolt scored for the Stampede who are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and 10-4-1 since February 20th. The Herd finished the regular season series against Lincoln with a 2-1-1 mark and are 21-15-3 against Western Conference opponents this season.
The Stampede knew they would be facing a hungry Lincoln team so a good start was a must and the Herd did just that scoring 5:21 into the game on Eric MacAdams 10th of the season. Jack Doremus sent a pass into the high slot for MacAdams who flew into the zone and blasted a shot perfectly into the upper left hand corner of the net and past Lincoln goaltender Peyton Jones to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. Sioux Falls had a chance to add to that lead with back-to-back power play opportunities, but weren't able to generate much. The Stars battled back putting up 17 shots in the period, but Stefanos Lekkas turned them all away and the Herd led 1-0 after one period despite being outshot 17-6.
The fast pace continued in the second period with both teams exchanging some good scoring chances and opportunities on the power play, but neither team was able to put anything into the back of the net as Lekkas turned aside all 12 shots faced for the Herd while Jones stopped 10 shots for the Stars.
The third period was just as exciting as the first two with end-to-end action. The Stars pushed hard to get the tying goal, but Lekkas stood on his head again and denied any Lincoln shot that came his way, keeping the game still just 1-0 late into the game. With just over a minute remaining, the Stars pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and threw everything they had at the Herd, but Lekkas and the Stampede defense shut down the Stars leading to an empty net goal by Josh Passolt with two seconds remaining to seal the victory and move the Herd into a fourth place tie.
Lincoln outshot the Herd 37-22 on the night and went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-4.
The Stampede return to action this Tuesday when they host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05 PM at the PREMIER Center. It is also The Furniture Mart Family Night where fans can get 4 lower level tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas and 1 large popcorn for just $49. Packages may be purchased through the Stampede office and by calling 336-6060.
