Fightin Phils Complete Doubleheader Sweep over RubberDucks

The Reading Fightin' Phils (15-11) swept the doubleheader against the Akron RubberDucks (13-17) in a pair of extra-inning games on Sunday at Canal Park, winning Game 1 3-2 in eight innings and winning Game 2 6-4 in nine innings.

Turning Point

In Game 1, Reading's Mickey Moniak led off the eighth inning with a two-run home run to right field to make the score 3-1 Reading, scoring Raul Rivas who started the extra frame at second base. In Game 2, Reading scored a pair of runs in the ninth on an Adam Haseley run-scoring double and a Rivas RBI single to give the Fightins a 6-4 lead.

Mound Presence

Akron's Game 1 starter Zach Plesac went six innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, while walking three and striking out six in a no-decision. Reliever Ben Krauth came in and allowed a leadoff triple in the seventh but pitched out of the jam. In the eighth inning, he allowed a two-run home run to Mickey Moniak to fall to 0-2 on the season. Argenis Angulo threw a scoreless two-thirds of an inning to finish the eighth. In Game 2, Akron starter Matt Solter allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings for a no-decision. He left the game in the fifth with two runners on when Rob Kaminsky came in. Kaminsky gave up a two-run single to Cornelius Randolph that tied the game at 4-4. Nick Sandlin threw a scoreless sixth and Dalbert Siri threw a scoreless seventh before leaving in the eighth. Matt Whitehouse pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, but in the ninth he allowed a run-scoring double to Adam Haseley and a run-scoring single by Raul Rivas to make it 6-4 Reading.

Duck Tales

Akron managed six hits in Game 1, two each from Tyler Krieger and Ka'ai Tom, who hit his third triple of the season to lead off the third inning. He would score in a two-out infield single by Krieger. In Game 2, all four Akron runs came in the third inning. Krieger singled in Drew Stankiewicz, who walked to lead off the inning. Connor Marabell's three-run home run, his first of the season, capped the scoring for the Ducks.

Notebook

Transactions: Tyler Krieger was assigned to Akron from Columbus; Mitch Longo was placed on the IL with a lower-back strain...Game 1 starter Plesac has allowed two runs or less in all six starts. His three walks matched his season total entering the game. He entered the game leading the EL with a 0.86 ERA, which now stands at 0.96....Game 2 starter Solter has now allowed nine runs over his last two starts after giving up one through his first three...Tom and Krieger both had their fifth multi-hit games of the season in Game 1...Argenis Angulo has now made six consecutive scoreless appearances out of the bullpen (9.0 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 12 K)...Time of Game: 2:17 (Game 1), 2:52 (Game 2)...Attendance: 5,180.

On the Pond

The RubberDucks have an off-day Monday before starting a six-game road trip to Erie and Reading. Tuesday's game at Erie is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. LHP Tanner Tully (2-2, 4.33) is expected to start for Akron.
