Lake County Fielders News Release

Zion, IL - July 4, 2011-The Lake County Fielders celebrated their 4thof July with a 2-0 shutout over the Yuma Scorpions Monday evening at Fielders Stadium.

Starting pitcher Michael Moore (2-2) got the win for the Fielders, while Chris Thompson closed out the game for his 12th save of the season. Moore, who struck out three batters over seven scoreless innings, kept the ball low and relied on groundouts throughout the entire game. He induced three double plays, including one in the 4th inning with the bases loaded.

"I'm a ground ball pitcher," Moore said. "I just threw the sinker and let them hit it into the ground. I had great defense behind me all night."

Moore also had great run support, which was generously provided by second baseman Brandon Newton. Newton got the fireworks show off to an early start, as he led off the game with a rocket to deep right field.

"I'm not a home run hitter, so it's really uncommon for me to leadoff a game like that," Newton said. "I just found a good pitch to hit hard, and it went over."

The Fielders' second baseman was far from finished after his first at-bat, as he supplied his second RBI of the game with a fielder's choice groundout in the 5th. He ended the game going 2-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.

"We have all leaned on each other throughout this season, every game it's someone different," Newton said. "And today was just my day."

Other top performers from the game included doubles by Patrick Brooks and Matt Mansilla, along with singles from Joe Dempsey and C.J. Ziegler.

With the win, the Fielders (22-12) remain a perfect 7-0 verses Yuma this season, and also remain .5 game ahead in first place.

The team has a well-deserved day off tomorrow, and will resume play Wednesday to put their three game winning streak on the line against the Scorpions at 11:30a.m.

"It's nice to get another win in front of the home fans," Moore added.

"And we've got to keep it up."
