OF Gaines and RHP Roberts Named Players of the Week

July 5, 2011 - North American League (NAmL) News Release

(San Ramon, CA) The North American Baseball League, one of the premier independent professional leagues on the continent, announced today that San Angelo Colts outfielder Ronnie Gaines and Chico Outlaws right-handed pitcher David Roberts have been named the Rawlings Players of the Week for the week of June 26th.

Ronnie Gaines went 12/24 during the week for a .500 batting average. He also homered in consecutive games on July 1st and July 2nd and drove in 11 runs on the week. His RBI total was helped by a 6 RBI performance on July 1st. To cap it all off, Gaines also hit 5 doubles. Ronnie Gaines was the Colts' MVP in 2010 and was named "Mr. Baseball" in San Angelo because of his strong ties to the community. Gaines played college ball at Angelo State University in San Angelo, and was signed by the Chicago White Sox in 2008. With the exception of the 2008 season when he played in single-A with the White Sox, Gaines has spent his entire professional career with the Colts franchise. He has been a contributor all season and is among the team leaders in every major statistical category. Gaines is hitting at a .427 clip with 11 homeruns and 38 RBI. The San Angelo Colts are currently in first place in the Southern Division with a 22-14 record.

Chico Outlaws right-hander David Roberts made his second start of the season on July 1st and pitched 7 dominant innings without allowing a run. During that start, Roberts surrendered only 6 hits while walking 2 batters. He got the win and finished with an impressive 8 strikeouts. Roberts was a standout at Long Beach State where he compiled an impressive 8.5 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched. In 2008, he was drafted in the 4th round of the MLB amateur player draft by the Cleveland Indians. Now, the 6'3" 215 pound pitcher is looking to cement a spot in the Outlaws' starting rotation after pitching out of the Chico bullpen for most of 2011. He currently has 23 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched.
