Outlaws Walloped by Caps

Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO- With a sold-out crowd in attendance, the Outlaws looked to avenge a loss in the series opener. The Edmonton Capitals had other plans, however, as they scored in every inning but three to pound the Outlaws 11-2.

The visiting Edmonton Capitals struck first off of Chico starter Jason Mackintosh (1-3) Monday night. With two men on and only one out, Tom Collaro hit a three run bomb off the top of the scoreboard to put the away team up 3-0 in the first inning.

An inning later Edmonton would add a single run to increase their lead to four. With two out in the inning, pitcher Andrew Arreola started the rally with a single to center. A ground-rule double off the bat of Jamie McGraw would send Arreola to third. Arreola would come around to score on a single by Matt Rogelstad.

For a third consecutive inning, Edmonton posted a crooked number on the scoreboard. In the top of the third inning and, again, with two outs, the Capitals would put together successful at-bats to plate a run. After an Enrique Cruz walk, manager Orv Franchuck called a hit-and-run which was executed beautifully. With Cruz on the move, Nick Valdez roped a line drive to left-centerfield to score Cruz all the way from first base.

Already down five, the Outlaws would push a run across in the third inning. With men on second and third, Chris Lubanksi hit a deep fly ball to right field to plate Al Quintana from third and pick up his 20th RBI of the season.

Edmonton would prove in the fourth inning that their two out hitting was no fluke. For the third straight inning, this time after two strikeouts to kick off the inning, the Capitals scored with two outs to build their lead. This time their rally would be aided by a poor defensive inning; after a single by Matt Rogelstad who proceeded to steal second base, Todd Linden would send him home with a single on his own. Linden put himself on third with two consecutive stolen bases and come in to score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch to bring the score to 7-1.

After taking a break from scoring in the fifth inning, the Capitals opened up the game in the top of the sixth inning. After McGraw was hit by a pitch, Rogelstad hit a dribbler to first base that Brian McFall fielded, tagged first, and then threw to second base to complete the double play to end the inning, but it was all for not as home plate umpire Wayne Noelte called the ball foul. Rogelstad proceeded to hit a single to make the most of his second chance. A batter later, Edmonton capitalized on the disputed call when Todd Linden hit a three run homerun to put the Capitals up 10-1.

Both teams would add single runs to push the score to 11-2, but the game was all but over by the sixth inning. The Outlaws will now look ahead to game three as they will throw LHP Johnny Bravo (2-1) at the Capitals in hopes of turning the tide of the series.
