Field Slugs Hot Rods Past Lansing for Fifth Win in Six Games

Bowling Green, Ky. - Johnny Field may have had a seven-game hitting streak snapped the night before, but he didn't let that sour his Sunday afternoon as he slugged the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) past the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays), 3-1. Field finished just a triple shy of the cycle on a warm afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The tone was set early as Field led the bottom of the first off with a double to the right-field corner. One out later, Oscar Hernandez singled him home to give Bowling Green the early 1-0 advantage.

The Lugnuts would tie the game with a run in the top of the third. Mike Reeves started the rally with a single, and he would move to third on a hit by Dickie Joe Thon and a walk by Chaz Frank. Dawel Lugo then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, and Reeves scored to knot the game at one.

Field would not let the game remain tied for long, as he led off the bottom of the third with a powerful home run to right-center field. It cleared the 16-foot wall with ease, and his seventh home run of the season gave the Hot Rods back the lead for good.

Lansing would try and rally in the eighth as they put the first two men on, but Stone Speer struck out Lugo, and Colton Reavis entered and got prospects Matt Dean and Mitch Nay to pop up and end the frame with a run conceded.

Armando Araiza gave the pitching staff some needed breathing room as he blasted a home run over the Bowling Green bullpen in left field. It was Araiza's seventh of the season, but his first at Bowling Green Ballpark. It proved to be the game's final score in Bowling Green's 3-1 victory.

Jake Faria (6-4) allowed just one run on five hits, as he picked up his second consecutive win. It was his sixth triumph of the season, giving him sole possession of the team lead. Speer tossed two and one-third innings of scoreless relief, and Reavis recorded the final five outs to earn his team-leading seventh save of the campaign.

Brad Allen (3-2) started the game for the Lugnuts and took the loss. He conceded two runs on eight hits.

The Hot Rods have now won five of their past six games, and they'll try to make it a winning homestand on Monday night in the finale with Lansing. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT on a Pepsi Buck Monday. Gates will open up at 6 p.m., with the dollar specials occurring at the main concession stands.
