Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The football season doesn't kick off for eight more weeks, but on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field, the TinCaps were a field goal short against the South Bend Silver Hawks in a 10-7 setback. Daniel Palka delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie.
Though inconsequential in the outcome of the game, Silver Hawks shortstop Andrew Velazquez singled in the top of the second inning to reach base for a 72nd consecutive game to set a new Minor League Baseball record.
South Bend (16-7, 56-36) started the scoring with a run in the first inning and two more in the second only to see Fort Wayne (6-17, 36-56) put up seven unanswered runs. Franmil Reyes gave the TinCaps a 7-3 lead when he hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. It was the 19-year-old's seventh home run of the season, and first since May 27.
Fort Wayne built its lead with help from 2014 Padres first round selection Trea Turner, who led off and played shortstop. Turner joined the TinCaps yesterday after transferring from Short-Season-A Eugene. The 21-year-old singled in the third, stole both second and third base, and scored.
Though the team looked to be on its way to a second consecutive win, Fort Wayne couldn't preserve its four-run lead. Starter Ronald Herrera, who has been the team's most consistent starter this year, allowed 11 hits and a career-high seven earned runs.
Josh Richardson (0-1) replaced Herrera with one out in the top of the fifth. The reliever worked a career-long 3 2/3 innings allowing only two hits. But one of them was Palka's double to score Breland Almadova, who had been hit by a pitch and reached third on a pickoff attempt throwing error by TinCaps catcher Ryan Miller. The Silver Hawks added two more runs in the ninth for insurance.
Fort Wayne chased South Bend starter Blake Perry out of the game after four innings. Bud Jeter (3-2) came on in relief to toss 1 1/3 scoreless innings to receive credit for the win. Silvino Bracho pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 17th save of the season.
Velazquez's new MiLB record breaks the mark of 71 consecutive games on base previously shared by Kevin Millar and Kevin Youkilis, who accomplished the feat in 1997 and 2003, respectively. The stat was first tracked in 1996.
The TinCaps and Silver Hawks finish their four-game series at Parkview Field on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Jeffery Enloe is slated to start for Fort Wayne against Marcus Solbach. The game can be seen on XFINITY Channel 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and on the TuneIn Radio app.
