BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Johnny Field and Armando Araiza slugged solo home runs, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (10-13, 42-50) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (11-12, 43-49), 3-1, on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Playing in 91-degree temperatures, but with a heat index rising as high as 105 degrees, the Hot Rods took an early lead on an RBI single by designated hitter Oscar Hernandez in the first inning, scoring right fielder Field.
The Lugnuts loaded the bases with no outs in third, but an RBI sacrifice fly by Dawel Lugo plated the only run of the frame as Bowling Green starter Jake Faria (Win, 6-4) escaped the jam.
Bowling Green took the lead back with a solo home run by Field in the third against Lansing starter Brad Allen (Loss, 3-2).
Allen finished his afternoon with five innings pitched, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Araiza extended the Bowling Green lead with a solo home run in the eighth.
Bowling Green reliever Colton Reavis (Save, 7) pitched 1.2 perfect innings with one strikeout.
Lansing's Mitch Nay and Matt Dean each saw their fourteen-game hitting streaks end in the loss, with Nay's 18-game on-base streak halted in an 0-for-4 performance. Dean extended his on-base streak to 15 games with a first-inning walk.
Lansing and Bowling Green play the finale of the four-game series on Monday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Right-hander Jeremy Gabryzwski (6-3, 3.91) will start on the mound for the Lugnuts, while lefty Bruedlin Suero (1-1, 3,38) gets the call for the Hot Rods.
The Lugnuts return home on a Hump Day, Wednesday, July 16th, starring Humphrey the Camel and featuring Hump Day Happy Hour with half-off drinks from 7-8 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase via the stadium box office, telephone at 517-485-4500 and online at lansinglugnuts.com .
