FC Dallas News Release
FRISCO, Texas (Wednesday, March 12) - FC Dallas has signed 23-year-old defender Matt Hedges to a multi-year contract extension, the club announced today. Per league and team policy, the terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.
"There has been an ongoing negotiation to extend our agreement with Matt Hedges since the end of the 2013 season," FC Dallas Technical Director Fernando Clavijo said. "Matt has been better than anyone could have expected when we drafted him and his quality has really shown. We felt it was in the best interest of the club to extend his contract, and we were able to come to an agreement last week."
Hedges was selected by FC Dallas in the first round (11th overall) of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. He logged career highs in games played (33), games started (32) and minutes played (2,793) last season, all of which were team highs. He scored three goals for FC Dallas in both 2012 and 2013.
From May 9, 2012 to Oct. 5, 2013, Hedges appeared in 54 consecutive matches. That run was the second-longest in franchise history behind David Ferreira's streak of 66 games. A product of the University of North Carolina and Butler University, Hedges started 85 matches and scored 18 goals during his college career. He started 20 games as a senior at UNC, where he helped the Tar Heels to the 2011 NCAA Championship.
