FC Dallas Makes Six Selections at 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft

DALLAS, Tex. – FC Dallas concluded the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft via teleconference call on Friday making six total selections over four rounds.

During the four rounds, FC Dallas made six picks, and the club used those selections on: midfielder Kevin Wilson of University of San Diego (1st round, 4th overall), forward Abe Thompson of University of Maryland (2nd round, 16th overall), defender Aaron Pitchkolan of West Virginia University (2nd round, 23rd overall), defender Drew Cavanagh of College of Charleston (2nd round, 24th overall), defender Chris Schwarze of University of San Francisco (3rd round, 28th overall), and midfielder/forward Sammy Tamporello of Ohio State University (4th round, 40th overall).

"I am very pleased with how it went today as we drafted the players we wanted prior to the draft," FC Dallas Head Coach Colin Clarke said. "Each player has an opportunity to play for a Major League Soccer club and we are looking forward to seeing their future contributions to our soccer squad."

Kevin Wilson
Midfielder, 5-10, 175 lbs., Born: July 25, 1980 in Redondo Beach, CA

1st round (4th overall)

Finished his three-year career at the University of San Diego with 15 points (5-5=15) and 58 starts.
In 2004, was an All-Far West Third Team and a First Team All-West Coast Conference selection.
Played his freshman season at the University of Denver.
Played for the U-17 National Team in youth World Championship in Cairo, Egypt.


Colin Clarke, FC Dallas Head Coach: "Kevin is a central midfielder out of San Diego that is a good little player. I like the way he passes the ball and how hard he plays. He's a good character guy. He is somebody who I've had my eye on over the last couple years at San Diego and we are glad to have him."



Abe Thompson
Forward, 6-0, 170 lbs., Born: Jan. 12, 1982 in Tucson, AZ

2nd round (16th overall)

Is the all-time University of Maryland leader in points (112) and second in career goals (43).
In 2004, was an NSCAA All-America Third Team selection and a Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Was also an All-ACC First Team honoree.
In 2003, was a Hermann Trophy semifinalist.
In 2002, his 36 points (14-8=36) tied for the seventh best in school history for a season.
Began his career at Maryland in 2000 and had a medical redshirt after breaking his right foot in 2001.


Colin Clarke, FC Dallas Head Coach: "Abe is a big, strong and athletic forward. I had a good look at him last year when he was in with us during the summer, and I liked what I saw. He'll come in and work hard and have a chance to make our roster."



Aaron Pitchkolan
Midfielder, 6-2, 185 lbs., Born: Mar. 3, 1983 in Aurora, CO

2nd round (23rd overall)

With West Virginia in 2004, started in all 18 matches as a senior and collected eight points (3-2=8).
Began his freshman season with the University of Tampa, helping the Spartans win the Division II championship.


Colin Clarke, FC Dallas Head Coach: "Aaron is a big center midfielder at 6-2 and 185 pounds. He is somebody I saw at the combine in Los Angeles and I was impressed with how well he did. He is somebody who will come in with the right attitude and will work hard to get on this team."



Drew Cavanagh
Defender, 5-11, 180 lbs., Born: Aug. 27, 1982 in State College, PA

2nd round (24th overall)

Has played the past four seasons at the College of Charleston.
In 2004, was a NSCAA All-America First Team selection and an All-Southern Conference First Team honoree.
Started all 24 matches and helped his team advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996.
During his junior year, was an All-Southern Conference First Team selection.


Colin Clarke, FC Dallas Head Coach: "Drew is a versatile player who can play a couple spots along the back and can also be a solid midfielder. I've like what I've seen of him and I know he was a big piece of the puzzle for the College of Charleston."



Chris Schwarze
Defender, 6-0, 175 lbs., Born: Mar. 9, 1983 in Camarillo, CA

3rd round (28th overall)

In 2004 with the University of San Francisco, started all 19 matches and registered three assists.
Was an All-WCC First Team selection in 2004 and in 2003.


Colin Clarke, FC Dallas Head Coach: "I watched Chris played last year with the University of San Francisco, and he played very well. He's another guy that we are looking for that has good character and will work hard on and off the field."



Sammy Tamporello
Midfielder, 5-8, 150 lbs., Born: Aug. 20, 1982 in Richardson, TX

4th round (40th overall)

Played the past four seasons at Ohio State University.
In 2001, was one of only for Buckeyes and the lone freshman to play in all 19 matches.
Played his club ball with the Texas Longhorns, playing eight years with the Longhorns SC.
Attended L.V. Berkner High School in Richardson.


Colin Clarke, FC Dallas Head Coach: "Sammy is a local kid that will come in here and fight for a roster spot. There are more spots available this year with the reserve team and I look forward to seeing Sammy compete for a spot."
