D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 4, 2005) - D.C. United announced today that the club has acquired MetroStars defender Kenny Arena in exchange for future considerations. Arena, chosen by the MetroStars in the fourth round (32nd overall) of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft, brings a strong physical presence to a MLS Championship defense. Arena will be added to United's roster as a Senior Developmental player.
"We are very pleased to have Kenny join D.C. United," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "Kenny's size, strength and determination as a defender make him a welcome addition to our club."
Arena, who will celebrate his 24th birthday on February 6, appeared in 10 games for the MetroStars in both 2003 and 2004. He cracked the starting lineup eight times during his 2004 campaign racking up quality minutes. His only goal of the season came in a 2-1 win over the Los Angels Galaxy on June 19. In 2003, Arena made five starts including his league debut on May 10th against the Black-and-Red.
Arena's international experience as a defensive midfielder with the U.S. Under-20 team is extensive. His international resume includes the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championships where he helped the U.S. to a round of 16 finish.
By joining United, Arena will reunite with former University of Virginia teammate Alecko Eskandarian. Arena registered 24 points resulting from 5 goals and 12 assists in his four years at Virginia.
