Fayetteville Uses Early Goal to Top Mississippi

The Fayetteville FireAntz took the lead against Mississippi RiverKings in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-0 victory.

A goal 1:41 into the the first period by Kyle McNeil proved to be the game winner, and powered Fayetteville to the victory John Clewlow picked up the assist.

McNeil had a great game for the FireAntz, netting two goals.

Fayetteville was boosted by Peter Skoggard, who turned in a shutout with 30 saves. Skoggard certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.53 entering the contest.

The FireAntz stifled Mississippi RiverKings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Fayetteville's defense was surprisingly good. The FireAntz average 2.9 goals allowed per game. Fayetteville's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the FireAntz finished with 22 penalty minutes. By firing 37 shots on goal, Fayetteville exceeded the 24.1 shots it averages per game this year.

In addition, Fayetteville received assists from Kevin Kessler and Brandon Richardson, who each chipped in one.

Mississippi RiverKings could not produce up to it normal offensive output. Mississippi RiverKings averages 3.2 goals per game. Mississippi RiverKings put 30 shots on net during the contest, more than the 23.9 it averages per game.

Mississippi RiverKings was led by Phil Bronner, who took seven shots.

The FireAntz registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Matthew Krahn rejected 35 shots on goal for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
