Ice Flyers Win 2-1, Sweep Weekend

Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Pensacola Ice Flyers traveled the eastern Tennessee looking to pick up another win over the Knoxville Ice Bears and did just that with a 2-1 come from behind victory.

Much of the first period was scoreless until Knoxville's Ben Power fired a shot from the perimeter that beat Pensacola's Ross MacKinnon with 2:38 left in the period. Knoxville outshot the Ice Flyers 15-9 in the first period.

Pensacola needed a spark and, like last night, again looked to Joe Bueltel. Right off of a faceoff in the Ice Flyers' offensive zone, Bueltel dropped the gloves with Knoxville's David Segal 8:58 into the second. About three and a half minutes later, Corey Banfield picked up a turn over, passed to Podge Turnbull, and Turnbull put it home to tie the game.

The Ice Flyers appeared to take the lead when a puck bounced off of Keegan Flaherty but the officials ruled the puck was played with a high stick so the score remained tied 1-1. Pensacola finally took the lead for real when John Dunbar ripped a sharp angle shot from the right wing boards that hit Knoxville goalie Bryan Hince and redirected into the net. Brett Lutes had the only assist on the goal. That goal proved to be the difference maker and the game finished 2-1.

MacKinnon stopped 30 of the 31 shots Knoxville put on net and was named the second star of the game. Dunbar was named the first star for picking up the game winning goal.

The Ice Flyers' next game is this Friday, Feb. 14 when the Ice Flyers host their rivals, the Mississippi Surge. It will be Singles Night in the Hangar and puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
