Falcons Take Flight On Manchester In 57-Seconds

SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Springfield Falcons scored three goals in 57-seconds to skate past the Manchester Monarchs, 4-1, in front of 2,235 fans at the MassMutual Center on Friday night.

Manchester (3-2-0-0) is tied with the Providence Bruins (3-2-0-0) for second place in the Atlantic Division with six points. Springfield (2-3-0-0) is tied with the Portland Pirates (2-3-0-0) and the Hartford Wolf Pack (2-3-0-0) for fifth place in the Atlantic Division with four points each.

"We had four glorious chances to score in the second period but we weren't able to find the back of the net," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We tried to scratch our way back into the game but they scored an empty netter with (Jonathan) Bernier pulled at the end of the game. I have to give credit to (Springfield); they have a good team. They gave us all we could handle and then some."

Right wing Colton Fretter gave Springfield the lead in the game at 15:51 of the second period. As the Monarchs tried to clear their zone, center Ryan Potulny collected the puck behind Manchester's cage and tossed it out front. Fretter backhanded the puck past Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier for the 2-1 lead.

Center Oscar Moller broke the scoreless tie with his third tally of the season at 10:11 of the second period. Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov fed the puck to right wing Scott Parse who had a little jump in his step as he skated down the left wing. Parse cut in toward the net and tried to jam the puck past goaltender Devan Dubnyk but the netminder made the save. The rebound bounced to Dubnyk's left and Moller was on the doorstep to bat the puck out of mid-air and into the back on the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons not only tied the game but jumped out to a 3-1 lead in a span of 57-seconds at the end of the middle frame. Defenseman Chad Wiseman began the scoring furry with his first tally of the season at 15:22 of the second period. Left wing Charles Linglet ripped a shot from the right half wall that Bernier dropped down to his knees to make the save. The rebound bounced out to the hash marks where Wiseman got his first shot off and then jammed his own rebound past Bernier on the right side of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Left wing Chris Minard assisted on the Falcons first goal of the game.

Center Geoff Paukovich finished the quick scoring tear with his second goal of the season at 16:19 of the middle frame. Paukovich skated the puck around the net from left to right for the wrap around. Bernier was down at the left post in an attempt to stop the centerman and then he couldn't slide to the opposite post in enough time to stop the puck from crossing the goal line. Defenseman Johan Motin and left wing Bryan Lerg assisted on the third Falcons goal of the night.

Right wing Colin McDonald finished off the Monarchs with an empty net goal at 18:38 of the final stanza. Center Ryan O'Marra and defenseman Theo Peckham assisted on the goal.

Bernier (3-1-0) took his first loss of the season stopping 29 shots. Dubnyk (2-3-0) earned the victory with 27 saves on 28 shots.

Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Springfield was also 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Notables: The last time the Monarchs were defeated by the Falcons was a 4-3 shootout loss in Springfield on March 20, 2009...Manchester has a record of 49-14-5-3 overall against the Falcons since the team's inception in 2001...Springfield's three goals in 57 seconds ties a Monarchs record for the three fastest goals in team history; Lowell's Keith Aucion (7:30) and Mike Pandolfo (7:53) and Manchester's Greg Hogeboom (8:27) scored 57-seconds apart in the third period of the Monarchs 4-2 loss at the Tsongas Arena on March 19, 2006...Center Oscar Moller is tied with center Andrei Loktionov for the Monarchs goal scoring lead with three tallies each.

The Monarchs head back the Verizon Wireless Arena for their Home Opener on Saturday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. versus the Portland Pirates.
