Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons tallied two power play goals and a shorthanded goal in a 6-2 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday night.
To begin the first period, the teams exchanged power play chances. The Falcons were able to kill their penalty and convert on their man advantage with a goal from Craig Cunningham. His tenth of the year was scored on a wrist shot from the top of the circle. Corey Potter and Dustin Jeffrey assisted on the goal. With five minutes left, Greg Carey extended the Falcons lead to a 2-0 score. His team-leading sixteenth of the year was scored on a wrist shot in the slot. Justin Hache assisted on the goal.
The Falcons began the second period with another power play goal from Michael Bunting. The rookie deflected a Philip Samuelsson shot for his sixth of the year. Potter also assisted on the goal. Following the goal, the Pirates pulled goaltender Sam Brittain in favor of Mike McKenna. Just 59 seconds later, the Falcons continued their rout with a goal from Phil Lane. His third of the year was a rebound score after Jeffrey moved around a Pirates defender and pegged a shot on net. Cunningham registered the second assist on the goal. Rob Flick brought the score to a 4-1 margin with his fifth of the year on a one-timer. Chase Balisy fed the forward who was alone in the slot with Jonathan Racine collecting the other assist.
MacKenzie Weegar scored his fifth of the year 7:07 into the third period with Kyle Rau assisting. 2:17 later, Potter returned the Falcons to a three-goal lead with a slap shot for his second of the year. Eric Selleck and Stefan Fournier assisted on the goal to bring the score to a 5-2 Falcons lead. While shorthanded, Potter sent the puck from his own goal line into an empty net for his second goal of the night and fourth point of the night. The goal was the final score to conclude the game at a 6-2 Falcons win. Niklas Treutle made 33 saves to improve his record to 9-11-3. Brittain stopped eight shots and took the loss. McKenna saved nine shots in his relief effort.
The Falcons continue their home play next Friday at 7:00 p.m. with a contest against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Individual tickets can be purchased on ticketmaster.com.
