TONIGHT
The Stockton Heat close-out their four-game homestand, as the Bakersfield Condors make their final trip to Stockton Arena this season for a Saturday night tilt against the Heat.
Stockton enters tonight's contest playing their best hockey of the season, riding a four-game winning streak and a six-game home winning streak.
The Condors come in to tonight's game off the heels of 6-3 win over Manitoba, but are 4-5-0-1 over their last 10 games.
LAST TIME VS. BAKERSFIELD
On January 3rd, the Heat beat the Condors in a tightly played game that saw both Joni Ortio and Laurent Brossoit steal the show, but the Heat eventually won the game by a score of 3-1.
Derek Grant led the way offensively for Stockton, netting two goals, while Kenny Agostino earned first star honors by scoring the game-winning goal in the third period.
It was Stockton's third-straight win at the time and was the beginning of what is now their best stretch of the 2015-16 campaign.
WHO TO WATCH
Rarely do we feature goalies in the "who to watch" section but one of either Kevin Poulin and Joni Ortio will be the players to keep tabs on tonight in Stockton.
One of the big reasons of this turnaround has been the play between the pipes with Poulin and Ortio attempting to one-up the other in hopes of landing another start. Both netminders are riding two-game win streaks and both have put up some ace performances as of late.
In the month of January, Poulin is 3-1-1 while Ortio is 4-1-0. Poulin has allowed 11 goals on 154 shots (0.929) while Ortio has allowed 14 goals on 147 shots (0.905) during the month of January. Poulin has yet to play Bakersfield this season so but Ortio has played six games against the Condors this season.
For the Heat to continue to rise up the Pacific Division standings, the play of the goaltenders will have to continue the way it's currently going, giving their offense a chance to win every game.
GRANT AT IT AGAIN
Much has been made of forward Derek Grant's latest run as Stockton's leading points scorer. His streak of seven-straight games with a point set a long in team history, beating his own previous record of five-straight.
Remarkably, Grant has scored at least one point in 14 of his previous 16 games and in one of the two in which he was held without a point, he scored the shootout winner. And he's only responded by putting together back-to-back stellar performances, scoring two points in each of the last two games.
Grant will represent the Stockton Heat at the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic and tonight's tilt is his last in a Heat sweater before the break, so he'll certainly be looking to head to Syracuse on a high note.
Evidence from his play since the turn of the calendar would point towards that exact end. Hopefully for everyone's sake, the team and Grant both see their positive results continue tonight against Bakersfield.
#STKBACKINBLACK
For tonight's game against the Bakersfield Condors, the Heat are back in black, wearing their brand new black alternate sweaters.
The jersey is primarily black and features a red collar and the Stockton Heat red, yellow and white piping band around the elbows, as well as around the base and down the sides of the sweater.
The secondary Heat logo is featured on the front, with the primary Heat logo on the right shoulder and the primary Calgary Flames logo on the left shoulder.
Tonight will mark the first occasion that the Heat will don the new jerseys. Stockton will also wear the black jerseys on February 20 and 21, March 30 and April 6 and 10. Dates are subject to change.
Replica jerseys will be available for purchase in the Stockton FanAttic, which will be open during Saturday's game. Replica jerseys will be available in-store for $150. Limited sizes and quantities will be available so get yours today.
INTERESTING FACT
Something about the Condors brings out the Heat's "A-game" when it comes to the shot department.
In seven games against Bakersfield this season, Stockton has fired 64 more shots on goal, outshooting them in all but one game (December 26 @ BAK).
This season, the Heat have shot over 40 pucks onto Condors goalies on three occasions, the most against any single team this season. Shooting over 40 pieces of rubber at opposing netminders has occurred four times in the month of January and every time it's happened in 2016, the Heat have won the game.
