Falcons soar over Sharks 2-0 behind Dubnyk's stellar effort in goal

Worcester Sharks News Release

WORCESTER-When an offense is able to put 46 shots on goal, it's usually the sign of an overpowering offensive effort.

But that wasn't the case on Veteran's Day 2008, as the Sharks fell to Springfield 2-0.

The Falcons struck first with 8:31 left in the first period. Rob Bina tossed the puck up ice, where Tyler Spurgeon won the race to the puck on the right wing side and found Derek Bekar through traffic in front of the net. Bekar corralled the puck and flicked it past Sharks goalie Gerald Coleman as he fell to the ground on the left side of the goal.

Frazer McLaren and Theo Peckham lifted the game's intensity early on, throwing fists just under four minutes into the match. Not many blows were landed by either enforcer, but the two set the game's tone almost immediately. The physical play continued throughout the match, with three separate scuffles having to be broken up by officials throughout the second period and twice again in the third.

Springfield goalie Devan Dubnyk was obstinate in clogging the net, stopping 42 shots and possessing a knack for placing himself in the perfect position to stop each and every Worcester shot. It was Dubnyk's first career AHL shutout.

The Sharks outshot the Falcons 46-16.

The loss brings Worcester's record to 5-7-0-0, while the win gives the Falcons a 6-3-2-1 record.
