Falcons Shutout by Steelheads

March 23, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

BOISE, Idaho - Goaltender Steve Silverthorn made 20 saves as the Idaho Steelheads shutout the Fresno Falcons behind three power play goals, 3-0, in the first of a three-game series between the two clubs at Qwest Arena.

The Steelheads struck just 2:59 into the game on their first power play of the night. Kurt MacSweyn banged in a rebound after Fresno goaltender Jamie Holden made an initial save on Paul Caponigri, and Idaho took a 1-0 lead to the second.

After failing on their next four power play chances, the Steelheads found the back of the net with the extra man at 15:02 of the middle period. Again it was off a rebound, as this time Dan Hacker put a second chance opportunity past Holden.

Trailing 2-0 into the third, Fresno was looking to avoid being shutout for the first time this season. Silverthorn was not tested often, though, having only to stop 20 shots on goal. Hacker finished the scoring when he re-directed a pass from Marty Flichel at 11:19 of the final period for his second of the night and his team's third power play marker of the game.

The loss ends a nine-game unbeaten streak for the Falcons, as they suffer their first regulation loss since Feb. 28 and drop to 37-12-13 on the year.

Fresno and Idaho continue their three-game set at Qwest Arena on Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25. Both games can be heard live on 1550 Sporting News Radio beginning with the FutureTek Pre-game Show at 5:50 p.m. Pacific each evening.
