Falcons Rally For 5-4 Win In Portland
March 14, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
The Springfield Falcons used the momentum they gained from their Saturday night win on home ice to rally for a 5-4 shootout win in Portland on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons used a pair of goals from Rob Hisey and once again a standout performance by goaltender J.P. Levasseur in the shootout to earn the win. Springfield has now won three straight road games and concluded the weekend with back-to-back victories.
Chad Wiseman scored the lone goal of the shootout on Sunday, and Levasseur for the second straight night stopped all the shooters he would face in helping Springfield to the victory. Levasseur stopped all 11 shooters he went up against in the shootout this weekend.
Trailing 4-2 entering the third period, the Falcons used a pair of goals in the final stanza to send the contest to the extra session. Slava Trukhno started the Falcons' comeback in the final 20 minutes when he converted a Hisey pass. Hisey tied the score with his second goal of the game late in regulation and completing an impressive afternoon for the center. Hisey finished the game with a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" collecting two goals, one assist and holding his own in a first period fight with Portland's Paul Byron.
"It's all part of the game at times, dropping the gloves," said Hisey, who also scored the game-winner in the shootout on Saturday night. "We battled hard tonight and it was nice to get the win and keep our momentum."
The Pirates built a 2-0 lead just 1:11 into the middle period when Jeff Cowan scored on the power play. The Falcons cut their deficit to 2-1 at 3:08 of the second period when Hisey scored his ninth goal of the year. Byron extended the Pirates' advantage to 3-1 at 13:19 of the second period when he converted a Kyle Wanvig pass on the man advantage. Chris Armstrong answered back for the Falcons at 15:12 of the middle frame when he scored on the power play, but Portland regained a two-goal lead at 19:24 of the second period when Philip Gogulla scored his 13th goal of the year.
Earlier in the second period, Gogulla and Springfield's Colton Fretter dropped the gloves and earned fightning majors.
Portland's Derek Whitmore gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead at 14:35 of the first period. Less than a minute after Portland took the lead, Hisey and Byron dropped the gloves for a spirited fight at center ice.
