Houston Aeros News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - D Justin Falk tied the game late in the third period to force overtime, but in the end it was the Rockford IceHogs (40-25-3-3) who took a 3-2 shootout victory over the Houston Aeros (29-29-6-4) in front of 4,505 at the Rockford Metro Centre Sunday evening. RW Petr Kalus also scored for Houston and G Anton Khudobin (11-16-4) made 28 saves in the defeat. Forwards Danny Bois and Pete MacArthur scored the regulation goals for the IceHogs while G Corey Crawford (20-14-2) stopped 25 of 27 shots in the win.
The IceHogs outshot the Aeros 15-4 in the opening frame, but after 20 minutes of play both clubs headed to intermission with goose eggs on the board.
The Aeros broke the scoreless tie 2:50 into the second period. D Ryan Gunderson dumped the puck into the Rockford end where a fortunate bounce off the end boards set up Kalus in the slot where he uncorked a slap shot to the back of a wide open net.
Rockford answered with a pair of unanswered goals to close out the middle frame. Bois tied things up with a short-side wrister at 11:33 before MacArthur gave the IceHogs their first lead of the game when he beat Khudobin with a wrap-around bid at 18:49.
The IceHogs held that lead for the majority of the third period until Falk tied the game at the 16:06 mark. RW Duncan Milroy fired the initial shot on net that deflected out to the left point where Falk one-timed it past Crawford for his third of the season.
Neither club found the net over the remaining 3:54 of regulation and after a scoreless overtime period the Aeros and IceHogs went to a shootout. Crawford stood tall stopping all four shots faced in the shootout while C Evan Brophey scored in the second round for the eventual game-winner.
The shootout loss is the second in as many nights for the Aeros and the third in their last six contests. Houston was outshot 31-27 for the game while the IceHogs killed the lone power play of the affair. The Aeros fall to 2-2-2-1 against Rockford this season and finish the season series Apr. 6 at Toyota Center.
The Aeros return home for "Kids Free Weekend" at Toyota Center as they play host to the Milwaukee Admirals Saturday and Sunday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Saturday and the first 3,000 fans receive a Cal Clutterbuck bobblehead. Call 713.974.PUCK (7825) for more information.
