Falcons Soar Past Pirates On Penalty Shots

Portland, Maine - Chad Wiseman scored the lone shootout goal and Jean-Philippe Levasseur turned aside all five shots he faced as the Springfield Falcons rallied from a two-goal third period deficit to beat the Portland Pirates 5-4 in a shootout in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,903 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Rob Hisey paced the Falcons with two goals and an assist while Chris Armstrong and Viacheslav Trukhno also scored. Springfield posted their second straight shootout victory and moved to 23-34-9-3 on the season.

Derek Whitmore, Jeff Cowan, Paul Byron and Philip Gogulla scored for the Pirates while Kyle Rank and Mike Kostka (who extended his assists streak to five games) each collected two assists. Portland dropped to 36-22-5-4 with the loss.

Whitmore scored the lone goal of the opening period to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead after one. The Whitmore goal brought more than 800 teddy bears onto the ice in the second annual teddy bear toss presented by State Farm. The bears will be donated to local charities.

Portland got off to a quick start in the second as Cowan scored a power-play goal 71 seconds into the period to put the home side up 2-0 and set off a see-saw period in which the two teams traded goals (Hisey, Byron, Armstrong and Gogulla - with 36 seconds left in the second) to bring the score to 4-2 Portland at the end of two. Trukhno and Hisey scored in the third to force extra time.

The Pirates out shot the Falcons 40-27 in the game as J.P. Lamoureux took the loss.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Hisey, 2. Byron and 3. Trukhno.

The Pirates wrap up a stretch of four straight home games Tuesday night against the Lowell Devils at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center. It's Two-for-Tuesday presented by WBLM and WCYY as fans can purchase two tickets for $22. It's also Sun Tan City Ladies Night.
