Falcons Lose in Shootout
April 5, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. â The Fresno Falcons trailed the Long Beach Ice Dogs by a single goal on four different occasions but still managed to tie the game each time before finally succumbing in a shootout on Friday at Long Beach Arena, 5-4.
Long Beach's Trent Clark led off the scoring with a power play goal at 9:33 of the first period when he picked up a rebound and slid it by Fresno netminder Terry Friesen. The Falcons tested Ice Dogs goaltender B.J. Boxma with several good chances during the frame, but he turned away all 11 shots he faced to preserve a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.
The Falcons' Rob Bonneau tied the game 2:24 into the second with his fifth of the year before the Ice Dogs re-gained their lead off an unassisted goal from Chris Peyton at 5:35. Fresno responded 1:14 later with Jarrett Zukiwsky's first goal as a Falcon only to give-up a power play goal to Tyler Willis at 12:07. For the third time of the evening Fresno overcame a one-goal deficit when Kris Porter picked up his team-leading 34th of the season on the power play at 15:03, and the clubs headed to the third tied at three.
Yet again, Long Beach would take a one-goal lead after Willis notched his second of the night just 1:42 into the final period. Several minutes later, though, Porter found Ryan Kiley alone in the slot, who beat Boxma to tie the game at four, which was how the game ended through 60 minutes of regulation.
In the shootout, Boxma stopped all four Falcons shooters he faced, and Clark and Peyton beat Friesen to give the Ice Dogs the 5-4 shootout win.
With the one shootout point, Fresno is now 34-28-9 with 77 points.
The Falcons wrap up the regular season tomorrow night in Long Beach with another game against the Ice Dogs before taking on the Idaho Steelheads in the first round of the Taylor Cup Playoffs. Tomorrow's game can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show. Fresno's title defense gets underway with Games One and Two of the best-of-seven series on Apr. 11 and 12 in Boise at the Bank of America Centre.
