April 5, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
N. CHARLESTON, SC -- After falling behind 2-0 through one period, the Pee Dee Pride scored three times in the second period, en route to a 4-3 win in game three of the Southeast Division Semifinals, taking a two games to one lead in the series. Peter Fregoe led the Pride offense, scoring a goal, and adding a pair of assists.
After scoring two goals last night in game two, Joel Irving added his third goal of the series just 1:51 into the opening period. The Pride had pressure in the Stingrays' zone, but South Carolina was able to clear the puck, with Ryan Brindley feeding a pass to Irving. Just inside of the Pride zone, he got around the check of Mike Torney, and let a quick wrist shot go that beat Ron Vogel on the far post.
South Carolina added to its lead with just 1:12 remaining in the first period. Robin Gomez stole the puck off of B. J. Adams' stick at the Pride blue line, and came in all alone on Vogel. Gomez got Vogel to go down to the ice, and he slid the puck inside of the near post for his first of the playoffs.
Pee Dee ended an 0-for-23 power-play drought to pull within one at the 3:37 mark of the second period. Peter Fregoe one timed a shot from the goal line past Kirk Daubenspeck for his first career playoff goal.
The Pride picked up more momentum by killing off back-to-back penalties, including a four-minute double minor midway through the middle period. The Pride would then tie it on another power play goal, thisn one by Matt Reid, with assists from Fregoe and the Carriere.
Just over a minute and a half later, Pee Dee took its first lead of the night. Wes Goldie and Greg Schmidt raced into the Stingrays' zone on a 2-on-1 rush. Schmidt's shot hit off the end boards, and came right to Goldie who put it into a wide-open net for his first of the post-season.
South Carolina would not die though, and they tied the game at 3 at the 10:35 mark. Brent Henley rushed down the right wing side and let a quick shot go. Vogel made the save, but the rebound came free, and Trevor Johnson pinching in from the blue line put it past Vogel.
But, the Pride came right back, going ahead just 1:58 later. Peter Fregoe's shot hit off of the post, but Kyle Kidney was right there to put the rebound home for the game winner, his second of the series.
The Pride host the Stingrays in game four of the series on Monday night at the Lion's Den. Face off is set for 7:00. Tickets are available at the Florence Civic Center Box Office, or through TicketMaster at (843) 679-9333 or www.ticketmaster.com.
