Falcons End Regular Season on Winning Note
April 5, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. â Colin Embley's pair of power play goals along with a game-winner from Kris Porter that was the 100th goal of his professional career helped the Fresno Falcons to a 4-2 win on Saturday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs at Long Beach Arena.
Embley drew first blood for the Falcons with a power play goal at 7:00 of the opening frame off a pretty feed from Kevin Haupt. Long Beach tied the game in the waning moments of the period. Mike Barrie led a three-on-two into the Falcons' end and shoveled a backhand by Terry Friesen with only .8 seconds on the clock.
Fresno used a lucky break to take its second lead of the evening early in the second period. Kirk DeWaele took a shot from the blue-line that was partially deflected before it wobbled and rolled its way past a hand-cuffed B.J. Boxma at 5:38. The Ice Dogs quickly re-tied the game less than two minutes later off another odd man rush. Barrie fed Mike Kelleher, who lifted the puck top-shelf past Friesen to complete a two-on-one, and the teams headed to the third tied at two.
After a Fresno power play had just expired early in the third, Rob Bonneau found Porter in front for the eventual game-winner and the personal milestone. The Falcons tacked on some insurance 1:14 later with Embley's second power play marker of the game at 7:27.
Fresno completes the regular season with a four-game unbeaten streak and a record of 35-28-9 and 79 points.
The Falcons now begin preparations for their first round Taylor Cup Playoff match-up against the Idaho Steelheads. Fresno's title defense gets underway with Games One and Two of the best-of-seven series on Apr. 11 and 12 in Boise at the Bank of America Centre. Games Three and Four will be played at Selland Arena on Apr. 16 and 18 with single-game tickets going on sale for both contests on Monday, Apr. 7, at 12 p.m. at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster locations and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
