Falcons Go .500 in Four One-Goal Games

February 25, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

The Fresno Falcons played four one-goal games last week and came away with a record of 2-2. Both of their victories were 4-3 decisions against the San Diego Gulls, one during a Presidents' Day matinee at Selland Arena and the other on Saturday night at the San Diego Sports Arena. The win on Saturday avenged a 2-1 loss the previous evening to the Gulls at Selland.

Fresno finished the week at Long Beach on Sunday with a 6-5 loss to the Ice Dogs. The defeat was the Falcons' first on the road since a 4-2 setback on Jan. 4 at Idaho and halted a franchise-record nine-game winning streak away from home. The streak was the second longest in league history behind an 11-game run the Tacoma Sabercats strung together in 1999-00.

The club begins this week with a record of 28-19-5 and 61 points, eight points behind both the Gulls and the Bakersfield Condors.

11-GAME TREK CONTINUES

The Falcons' 16-day odyssey through the entire West Coast Hockey League continues this week with five games as the longest road trip in franchise history takes them to both Anchorage and Idaho. Fresno tries to keep alive an eight-game winning streak against the Aces on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both tilts can be heard live beginning with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show at 7:50 p.m. PST on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat.

The Falcons then face the Steelheads in three straight games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The radio broadcast for each begins at 5:50 p.m. PST with the pre-game show.

INJURIES CONTINUE TO MOUNT AND FORCE ROSTER MOVES

Injuries continue to plague the Falcons as they were forced to place all-time leading goal scorer Mike Mathers (shoulder) on season-ending injured reserve Sunday, where he joins Steve Lowe (knee) and Joe Frederick (shoulder). The news worsened later in the day when newcomer Chris Kenady suffered a cut tendon in his hand after getting kicked by former Falcon Mike Barrie of the Ice Dogs. Kenady and Barrie were traded for one another on Feb. 14, and the former is expected to miss four to six weeks.

With Kevin Haupt still hobbled by an ankle injury and Alex Todd out with a broken jaw, Fresno made two moves to try to bolster their line-up. They re-signed assistant coach Greg Spenrath in time for Sunday's game for his second stint back in uniform since retiring after last season and claimed forward Andrew Gardner off waivers from the Aces. Gardner is a rookie who played collegiately at the University of Southern Maine and appeared in one game for Anchorage, ironically, against the Falcons. More help will arrive later in the week when Glen Gulutzan is slated to return from the 14-day IR in time for the series against Idaho.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE

The Falcons remain on the road all week and do not return for another home game until March 14 when the Bakersfield Condors come to town.
