Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA â The Lowell Lock Monsters received goals from four different skaters as the club defeated the Springfield Falcons, 4-1, at the Springfield Civic Center on Tuesday evening. Rookie center Kiel McLeod scored the lone Falcons' marker in the third period. Former Falcon goaltender Patrick DesRochers stopped 32 of 33 shots for the Lock Monsters. David LeNeveu made 32 saves in the Springfield net.
The Lock Monsters opened scoring with a shorthanded goal by defenseman Tomas Malec with 3:39 left in the first period. Malec benefited from the forechecking and corner work of right wing Matt Davidson, who was able to work the puck toward the front of the Springfield net. Malec lifted the puck over the shoulder of LeNeveu after receiving it in the slot for his fifth goal of the season.
Lowell extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the second frame. The Monsters' leading goal scorer Martin Sonnenberg put a shot from the bottom of the right wing face-off circle between the pads of LeNeveu for his 19th tally of the season at the 8:28 mark.
Center Brett Lysak pounced on the rebound of a breakaway attempt by right wing Justin Kelly to score during a power play for Lowell 6:21 later. Kelly skated in alone on LeNeveu after intercepting a pass from Falcons defenseman Todd Reirden in the Springfield zone. LeNeveu made a pad save on Kelly's bid, but Lysak followed up to lift a shot under the cross bar.
The Falcons spoiled Lowell's bid for the team's first shutout of the season when McLeod scored his fourth goal of the season with 6:13 remaining to play. Veteran Jeremiah McCarthy set up McLeod at the top of the crease with a feed from behind the net. Recent addition Tom Koivisto also collected an assist on the goal.
With LeNeveu pulled from the Springfield net for an extra attacker, Lowell tacked on an empty net goal from center ice by Garrett Bembridge with two seconds left on the game clock.
The Falcons were scoreless in four power-play chances and killed off five of six shorthanded situations.
With the loss, Springfield's record against the Lock Monsters this season dropped to 1-7-0-0. The Falcons overcame Lowell, 4-1, in the previous meeting on February 21st.
The Falcons will play their next four games on the road beginning with a visit to the Providence Bruins on Friday. The club will return to the Civic Center to face the Portland Pirates on Friday, March 26th. For information on tickets and group discounts, please contact the Falcons team office at (413) 739-3344.
