Falcons Clipped by Crunch, 4-1

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons were clipped by the Syracuse Crunch, 4-1, tonight at the MassMutual Center.

The Falcons now move to 34-25-7-0 on the season with 75 points. The team still holds a 4-3-0-0 lead in the eight-game season series with the Crunch.

Falcons goaltender Joonas Korpisalo made his American Hockey League debut, stopping 21 of 24 shots on goal. Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis earned the win, turning aside 13 of 14. Springfield was unable to convert on two man-advantages. The penalty kill unit stopped four of six Syracuse power plays.

The Crunch were first to light the lamp with 9:35 remaining in the opening frame. Dylan Blujus fired the puck into the corner, but it took a bounce off the glass and ended up in front of the net. Justin Courtnall took advantage and beat Korpisalo with a backhander from the right post. Joel Vermin earned a point on the play.

The Falcons responded later in the period with 3:08 left on the clock. Michael Chaput picked up the puck from Mike Hoeffel at the end boards and chipped it out to Luke Adam in the slot. Adam knotted the score, 1-1, with his 14th goal of the season.

Syracuse took back their lead just 3:04 into the middle twenty. While on the power play, Jonathan Marchessault sniped one from the right point off assists from Blujus and Tanner Richard.

With 20 seconds remaining, another power-play tally gave the Crunch a two-goal lead. Korpisalo made the initial save on Carter Ashton's shot, but left the rebound out for Yanni Gourde to clean up while the goaltender was out of position. Slater Koekkoek earned credit for secondary assist.

Mike Angelidis gave the Crunch a 4-1 lead with 5:57 remaining in the contest. Joey Mormina fired a shot that was stopped by the netminder. Angelidis took control of the rebound in slipped it behind Korpisalo and across the goal line.

The Falcons are back in action on Friday, March 27 when they host the Worcester Sharks at 7 p.m.
