March 22, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Manchester, N.H.-- After a month of not losing in regulation, the Portland Pirates (35-23-5-1) fell to the Manchester Monarchs (41-15-6-2) 3-1 in Manchester on Sunday afternoon. The teams met for the ninth installment of the VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires and Service this season.
After remaining scoreless through much of the first two frames, the Monarchs got the ball rolling with goals late in the second period of the game. A goal from Sean Backman at 17:03 would break the seemingly never ending tie with assistance from Colin Miller. Less than two minutes later at 18:55, Manchester's Justin Auger would score off of a face-off, assisted by Jordan Weal.
The Pirates would not go down without a fight. Halfway through the third frame, Jordan Martinook would put the Pirates on the board at 10:34 with help from Alex Bolduc and Phillip Samuelsson. Unfortunately, Auger netted an insurance goal for Manchester during the final minute of regulation at 19:00 with an assist from Brian O'Neill.
David Leggio (1-1-0) was in between the pipes for Portland this afternoon and was able to block 27 out of the 30 shots the Monarchs sent his way. Manchester's net minder, Jean-Francois Berube (31-8-4) saved 22 out of the 23 shots the Pirates fired at him.
The Pirates will be back in town Wednesday, March 25 for the first of two Eimskip Challenge matchups against the St. John's Ice Caps at 7p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. They host the IceCaps for a second game on Friday the 27th at 7 p.m. Tickets for Friday's game are BOGO-half-off. For tickets and more information call 207-PIRATES.
