
Checkers Slow Down Wild 4-2

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild (21-40-1-2, 45 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (27-33-5-1, 60 points) 4-2 in front of 4,891 fans on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena. Charlotte forwards Brody Sutter, Justin Shugg and Chad LaRose, each tallied a second-period goals to help the Checkers push past the Wild. Charlotte goalie John Muse (9-11-2) made 29 saves on 31 shots in the victory. Wild defensemen Joel Chouinard (1g,1a) and Jonathon Blum (2a) each had two points in the defeat. Forward Marc Hagel also scored as Iowa dropped to 0-10-0-1 over the last 11 games at home. Wild goalie John Curry (11-18-1) stopped 22 of 25 shots in the setback. Iowa hosts the Texas Stars at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 24.
After a scoreless first period, Iowa opened up the scoring 5:51 into the second when forward Marc Hagel fired the puck into the net on a wraparound. Hagel's 10th goal his year was assisted by defensemen Jon Blum and Joel Chouinard, giving the Wild a 1-0 lead. The Checkers tied the game at the 6:52 mark of the period when forward Brody Sutter tipped in a shot from defenseman Beau Schmitz, beating Iowa goalie John Curry. Rookie defenseman Trevor Carrick added an assist on Sutter's eighth goal this year, tying the game at 1-1. Charlotte took the lead when forward Chad LaRose fired a slapshot into the net at 11:10 of the period. LaRose's 17th goal this season was set up by rookie defenseman Austin Levi for the 2-1 Checkers lead. Charlotte widened the gap after Justin Shugg scored at the 13:53 mark of the period. Shugg's 19th goal this year was aided by forwards Brendan Woods and Brock McGinn, giving Charlotte a 3-1 lead.
In the third period, the Wild drew within one when Chouinard scored at the 29 second mark. Chouinard ripped a shot from the blueline past Charlotte goalie John Muse for the 3-2 Checkers lead. Blum and rookie forward Zack Mitchell assisted Chouinard on his second goal this season. Charlotte's Zach Boychuk finished of the scoring at 19:58 with an empty-net goal for the 4-2 final.
Iowa continues its six-game home stand the Texas Stars at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 24. It's a Taco Tuesday - presented by Taco Johns, where each fan that comes to the game receives a coupon for a free crispy beef taco from Taco Johns. It's also a two-for-one Tuesday, where fans may purchase one attack end ticket and receive a second ticket free, sponsored by Hits 99.9 FM. Also, those who bring in a Subway receipt may purchase a $5 game ticket at the box office.
Iowa hosts San Antonio at 7 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 27 and at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 28 to finish its home stand. Friday is "Go Green" Night, sponsored by MidAmerican Energy. The team is to wear green jerseys during the game, and fans are encouraged to wear green as well. Fans that bike to the game receive a ticket voucher or a Bike World voucher. Des Moines Junk is collecting items for recycling prior to the game, such as laptops, computer towers, cell phones, flat screen televisions, etc. Those who donate may bring their items to a truck parked outside the arena's north entrance and follow the proper recycling process (remove hard drive and completely destroy, disassemble equipment, recycle all eligible parts). Fans who donate, receive a voucher to a future weekday home game. The Wild also holds an Erik Haula bobblehead giveaway on Friday, presented by Krist Insurance. It's also a $2 Beer Night, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Fans may purchase 10-ounce domestic beers for only $2 through the first period of play. Saturday's game is Faith and Family day, where Iowa is honoring sports champions from across the state. Additionally, fans may purchase the More 104 Subway Combo Pack, which starts at $12 per person and includes a ticket, a hot dog, a soda and a Subway coupon. Fans may also purchase the Brewdog Pack, presented by Legends American Grill. The package starts at $15 per fan, consisting of a ticket, a Wild puck, a hot dog and a beer at the game. Fans also receive a beer at Legends American Grill - downtown location.
The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team's 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena. Season tickets to see the Wild play at Wells Fargo Arena start at just $9 per game.
