LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Winston-Salem Dash lost to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws on Saturday by the score of 3-2.
A pitching duel gave way to a silent first seven innings. Ryan Skirrow was handed the ball for the Lakewood BlueClaws and went four hitless innings, striking out six batters and walking only one. Taylor Varnell fared about as well in his second start for the Dash, giving up only two hits, three walks and striking out five batters through four frames. Neither starter factored into the decision of the contest, which was hashed out in the later innings.
Dash batters found a way to plate some runs in the seventh inning, beginning with a walk drawn by Alex Destino. With the Dash down to their final out in the inning, Luis Mieses cranked a two-run shot into right field- his third home run of the season. The bomb put the Dash ahead 2-0.
The 'Claws response came in small blips in the seventh and eighth frames. Herbert Iserled off in the home half of the seventh with a solo blast to right, marking his second homer on the season. Keaton Greenwalt stepped up in the eighth inning and clobbered a home run of his own to tie the game at two runs apiece. A scoreless ninth took the Dash and the 'Claws into an extra-innings showdown.
With Bryson Stott at second base to start the bottom of the tenth, Vito Friscia flied out to right field and advanced Stott to third base. Jonathan Guzman capitalized on the chance to be an extra inning hero and singled on a line drive to center field, scoring Stott and locking down the 3-2 victory.
Victor Santos nabbed the late-game win for the BlueClaws, while Caleb Freeman took the loss for the Dash. The BlueClaws' victory secures a series win, as they now lead the Dash four games to one.
The two teams go head-to-head again tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the six-game series. Chris Adamson will call on righty Jonathan Hughes to take the bump for the Crawdads. Ryan Newman and staff have yet to announce the starter for the Dash. First pitch from FirstEnergy Park is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
