Greenville Drive News Release
Asheville, NC - Greenville scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings while four Drive pitchers-Jay Groome, Oddanier Mosqueda, Yorvin Pantoja and Jacob Wallace-allowed just four total hits to slip past the Tourists, 3-2, in game five at McCormick Field Saturday night.
With the win, Greenville improves to 8-9 on the year, and gives the Drive the chance to split the six-game series tomorrow at 1 PM.
Jay Groome grooved over the first 3.2 innings, only allowing one walk with seven strikeouts. However, after a two-out hit by Scott Scheiber, Groome walked the next three batters he faced before being removed from the game. His final line was 3.2 innings, one run on one hit and four walks with a season-high seven strikeouts. It was one short of his career-high, which came against Asheville in 2017.
Mosqueda earned the win and hurled 2.1 innings and surrendered just one hit with five punchouts. Pantoja went 2.0 innings and allowed one run. Wallace earned the first Dive save of the year after a perfect ninth inning, fanning one batter.
Asheville starter, Jose Bravo, took the loss, relenting all three runs.
Christian Koss, Tyler Dearden, Nick Sogard and Michael Osinski each registered two-hit nights-tallying all eight hits for Greenville. Five of the eight Drive hits went for extra bases. Additionally, the away team went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Cam Cannon went 0-for-4, ending his seven-game hitting streak.
Dearden gave the Drive an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. He led off the frame and drove a 3-2 pitch to center field for his fourth home run of the year.
An inning later, Greenville added one more run. Koss skied a ball to center field for a one-out triple. Tyler Esplin followed that up with an RBI groundout to push the Drive's lead to 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Dearden once again started a frame with a bang. This time he doubled to center field. Sogard then drove in Dearden with double. Greenville held a 3-0 lead.
The Tourists chipped into the Drive's lead in the bottom half of the frame. After two quick outs, Groome allowed his first base hit of the game. He then promptly walked the next three batters he faced to put the score at 3-1. Oddanier Mosqueda replaced Groome and struck out the first batter he saw to end the threat and inning.
Asheville inched closer in the bottom of the eighth. Korey Lee stroked a one-out single and came around to score two batters later on a Tyler Krabbe RBI double.
The series finale is set for 1:05 pm at McCormick Park in Asheville, NC. The Drive are scheduled to send right-hander Brian Van Belle against right-hander Danny Cody.
