Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (61-72) forced a series split with the New Orleans Baby Cakes (66-66) after claiming a 5-1 victory in Monday night's series finale at Dell Diamond.
Express starter RHP Adrian Sampson (7-4, 3.73) spun 6.0 solid frames en route to the win, keeping New Orleans in check for one run on five hits and three walks. The right-hander also recorded a pair of strikeouts as he lowered his ERA as a starter this season to 2.68. On the losing end, Baby Cakes starter RHP Jeff Brigham (5-2, 3.44) was tagged for five runs, all earned, on eight hits and two walks over 5.0 innings.
Both teams traded dingers in the opening frame. New Orleans 3B Cristhian Adames connected on a two-out solo shot to left-center in the top of the first before Round Rock 3B Andy Ibanez returned the favor with a three-run blast to left in the following side. Ibanez's 11th homer of the season came just after RF Christian Lopes and LF Willie Calhoun reached base on a single and a walk, giving the E-Train an early 3-1 edge.
Round Rock's offense continued to roll in the second. C Tony Sanchez got things started with an opposite field single and moved up to second on a Nick Noonan groundout. With two outs, Lopes roped a double into the corner in left that to plate a run prior to extending the Express lead to 5-1 when he came home himself on CF Scott Heineman's RBI single.
Runs were tough to come by after the conclusion of the second as both squads were held scoreless while combining for nine hits. E-Train relievers LHP Brady Feigl and RHP Deolis Guerra did their part to keep the offense to a minimum, combing for 3.0 shutout innings to close out Round Rock's second straight victory.
Round Rock opens their final home series of the season on Tuesday night at Dell Diamond, a quick three-game set with the Memphis Redbirds (79-53). Express LHP Yohander Mendez (0-7, 5.43) is slated to face Memphis RHP Jake Woodford (4-4, 4.42) in game one. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT.
