Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds Saturday night 3-2 in the eighth annual Pink in the Rink night. This the third win in the last four seasons for the P-Bruins wearing the pink sweaters in support of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. The team got goals from Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, Kenny Agostino and Peter Cehlarik while Zane McIntyre made his second start in goal.

After a slow start, Providence opened the scoring at 12:58 of the opening period. After Samuel Montembeault blocked a shot from the bottom right circle by Agostino, Forsbacka Karlsson cleaned up the mess in the crease. Fighting in front of the goal, he slipped one through the five-hole for his second goal in as many games to give Providence a 1-0 lead. The P-Bruins had a chance to extend the lead on the power play, but a turnover in the neutral zone led to a shorthanded breakaway for Springfield. Chase Balisy capitalized with his first goal of the year at 13:50 as the teams entered the break knotted 1-1.

The P-Bruins regained the lead 12:39 into the second thanks to more production from their top line. Cehlarik fed Agostino beautifully with a centering pass from the right point, and Agostino blasted a one-timer in for his first goal as a Bruin. The team extended the lead to 3-1 at 14:33 thanks to Cehlarik's second goal of the season. This time receiving the feed from Agostino, Cehlarik blasted a slap shot from the right point that rattled around the crease before going in. Springfield responded with Balisy's second goal of the night at 14:59, but Providence took a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

The third period saw each team trade chance for chance, but McIntyre stopped any threat the Thunderbirds had. A last minute pull of the goalie was unsuccessful as the P-Bruins came away with a 3-2 win. McIntyre stopped 30 of 32 while Montembeault stopped 26 of 29. Providence was 1-4 on the power play and 6-7 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their weekend tomorrow night when they welcome Toronto to the Dunk at 7:05pm for their only home faceoff with the Marlies this season.
