Ontario Reign Game Preview: Reign Close Road Trip with First-Ever
October 14, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), take on the Chicago Wolves tonight at 5:00 p.m. PT at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. Tonight is the first of two meetings between the two clubs this season and the first-ever match up in team history.
Closing the Road Trip:
The Reign wrap up a season-opening three-game road trip tonight and look to snap a two-game skid. The Reign opened the 2017-18 season last Saturday with a 2-1 setback to the San Antonio Rampage at AT&T Center and fell to the Iowa Wild, 3-0, last night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
My Sweet Home, Chicago:
Reign forwards Sam Herr and Michael Mersch call Chicago home. Herr grew up less than 20 miles from Allstate Arena in Hinsdale, Illinois. Mersch learned the game just down the street in Park Ridge, Illinois.
A Long Time Coming:
Head Coach Mike Stothers takes the bench at Allstate Arena for the first time since the 2007-08 season when he was guiding the Grand Rapids Griffins. He went 1-2-1-0 in four meetings and last saw the Wolves on March 30, 2008 in a 6-4 loss in Chicago.
History of the Wolves:
The Wolves are in their 17th season of AHL hockey after moving over from the IHL prior to the 2001-02 season. Since joining, the Wolves have captured two Calder Cup titles (2002, 2008) and have made the playoffs in 11 of their previous 16 seasons. The Wolves have served as the AHL affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers (2001-11), Vancouver Canucks (2011-13), St. Louis Blues (2013-17) and are currently in their first season as affiliates for the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Centralize:
The Reign have had success against the Central Division over the past two seasons, holding a 12-4-1-0 record. The Reign went 6-1-1-0 against the Central Division last season with tilts against Iowa, Charlotte and Rockford and earned a 6-2-0-0 record in 2015-16 with appearances against Manitoba and Charlotte. They suffered a rare loss to the division last night in Iowa.
My Kind of Town:
The Wolves captured the Central Division regular-season title last season, going 44-19-8-5 for 101 points before falling in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. Their in-season success included a 7-0-1-0 record against Pacific Division foes with appearances against San Antonio and Texas.
Familiar Faces:
Defenseman Shea Theodore, who patrolled the blue line against the Reign the last two seasons with San Diego, was acquired by Las Vegas from the Anaheim Ducks and is currently tied for the team lead with five points. Theodore has five points (one goal, four assists) in seven games against the Reign. Goaltender Maxime Legace has appeared in six games against the Reign the last two seasons earning a 2-2-2 record while with the Texas Stars.
