Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Erik Cernak scored his first professional goal to tie the game in the third period, but the Syracuse Crunch were unable to find the go-ahead marker and were downed by the Utica Comets, 3-2, tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Cory Conacher tallied the other Crunch goal in a back-and-forth match against the Comets. The loss drops Syracuse to 1-2-1-0 on the season.
Crunch netminder Michael Leighton turned aside 16-of-19 shots. Thatcher Demko blocked 24-of-26 in victory for the Comets. Syracuse went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Utica converted on 2-of-7 man-advantages.
The Comets opened scoring seven minutes into the first period. Philip Holm sent a zone-to-zone pass for Nikolay Goldobin to net from the blue line.
The Crunch evened the score with 46 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Bodie threw a pass across the slot that got broken up by Utica's defense. Conacher picked up the loose puck in the right circle and fired home his second of the year. Anthony Cirelli earned a point for the secondary assist.
Utica regained the lead with a power-play goal halfway through the second period. Holm sent in a wrist shot from the high slot with the help of Carter Bancks and Goldobin.
Two minutes into the third period, Syracuse knotted the game again. Cernak powered a shot from right hash marks to beat Demko five-hole. Mitchell Stephens extended his points streak to four games with the assist, while Daniel Walcott recorded the secondary.
Utica stole back the lead for a third and final time off a power-play goal 6:38 into the third period. Michael Chaput tipped Evan McEneny's puck down low to net the eventual game-winner. The Crunch weren't able to find another equalizer and fell to the Comets, 3-2.
Syracuse travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to face the Penguins tomorrow at 3:05 p.m.
