Sioux City Explorers News Release
FARGO, ND-The Sioux City Explorers (30-28) couldn't get out of an early hole against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (30-25) Saturday night, losing 7-2 in the second game of the series. The RedHawks put themselves back to a game and a half ahead of the Explorers in the West Division standings with one game before the All-Star break.
Fargo scored first, putting up a run in the bottom of the first inning when RedHawks Evan Alexander scored on a Manuel Boscan single off Sioux City starter Solomon Bates (7-5), giving Fargo an early 1-0 lead.
The RedHawks followed with a big second inning, starting with Fargo's Matt Goodheart scoring on a BJ Lopez sac fly off X's Bates, extending the RedHawks lead to 2-0. Fargo's Alexander added on immediately after, sending home Sam Dexter on an RBI single, making it 3-0. The next at-bat, RedHawks Correlle Prime sent a two-run bomb off over the right field wall, creating a 5-0 Fargo lead in the second.
Leading off the bottom of the third, RedHawks Scott Schreiber, who hit two home runs against the X's yesterday, added another dinger, making it a 6-0 ball game.
The Explorers finally scored in the top of the fourth, starting with X's Jake Ortega crossing home on a Wilfredo Gimenez double off Fargo starter Tyler Grauer (5-1), cutting the deficit to 6-1. The next plate appearance, Gimenez came around to score when Miguel Sierra got his own RBI double off Grauer, making it a 6-2 game.
The next run wasn't scored until the eighth as RedHawks Grauer went eight innings, allowing six hits without a walk before he was pulled. In the bottom of the eighth, Fargo added one more run when RedHawks Goodheart made it home on a Nick Novak single off Sioux City reliever Brenden Heiss, making it 7-2 as Fargo cruised to the victory.
After the series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks the team will then have three days off for the American Association All-Star break July 17-19 before returning home to face Lincoln July 20.
