Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - In their highest-scoring game of the 2023 season, the Kane County Cougars erupted for 20 runs on 23 hits in a 20-1 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Saturday night in front of over 8,000 fans at Northwestern Medicine Field. Jonah Davis, Jimmy Kerrigan, and Armond Upshaw each hit two home runs in the win.
Along with the offensive onslaught, the Cougars (25-32) benefitted from a quality start by CJ Eldred (3-5). The right-hander allowed just one unearned run on four hits across six innings of work. Eldred recorded a season-high seven strikeouts without issuing a walk.
Kane County got the scoring started quickly against Sioux Falls (27-32) starter Seth Miller (0-3). Upshaw was the second hitter of the game for the Cougars, and he promptly launched a solo shot over the right-center field fence to make it 1-0. Following a JD Osborne single, Davis joined in on the fun as he belted a two-run shot to make it 3-0. The Cougars added one more in the first on an RBI single from Kerrigan to go ahead 4-0.
The fireworks continued in the bottom of the second. After Olivier Basabe and Osborne both singled, Davis crushed his second home run of the ballgame down the right field line to make it 7-0. Davis finished the night 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs, four runs, and a walk.
In the bottom of the third, the Cougars added three more on sacrifice flies from Galli Cribbs Jr. and Upshaw as well as an RBI single by Basabe to go ahead 10-0. Basabe finished the night 3-for-6 with 2 RBIs on his 26th birthday. One inning later, the Cougars added three more on an RBI double by Todd Lott immediately followed by a two-run homer from Kerrigan to make it 13-0.
The Cougars went on to add seven more runs. Kerrigan went deep again for the second time in the seventh with a two-run shot, pushing his home run total to nine on the season. Upshaw added the exclamation mark with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth that made it 20-1 Cougars. Kane County finished the night with a season-high 23 hits, each member of the lineup recorded at least one hit and five Cougars had at least three hits.
In relief of CJ Eldred, the Cougars bullpen tossed three scoreless innings. Keith Rogalla tossed a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts, followed by a perfect eighth from Ryan Richardson. Harrison Smith finished out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Cougars conclude the series with the Canaries on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Chris Hardin (2-3, 5.86 ERA) will take the mound for Sioux Falls against Jose Fuentes (1-0, 3.86 ERA) for the Cougars. For tickets and more information call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com/tickets.
