Sioux City.....St. Paul hit three home runs, two by Jacob Butler, as the Saints defeated the Explorers 5-3 Sunday at Lewis and Clark Park.
The win gave St. Paul the series two games to one with the season series now tied at nine games apiece.
Jason Cooper hit a solo home run in the first inning as the Saints took a 1-0 lead. The Explorers came back in the third to take a 2-1 lead on a throwing error by St. Paul catcher Jeff Eure and a sacrifice RBI by the X's Derek Schmerhorn.
St. Paul took the lead for good in the fourth inning 3-2 on a two-run home run by Jacob Butler. St. Paul made it a two-run lead 4-2 in the sixth on a RBI single by Anthony Norman. The Explorers cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning when Justin Nelson led off with a double and later scored on a two-out double by Jason Colson.
Butler's second home run of the game in the eighth inning gave St. Paul a 5-3 lead as Charlie Ruud defeated the Explorers for the 14th time in 15 decisions in his career.
The loss drops the Explorers into a two-way tie for fourth place in the American Association North with Sioux Falls. With Monday an off day, the Explorers will travel to Sioux Falls to start a three-game series Tuesday.
