
Wingnuts' Comeback Falls One-Run Short

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 5-4 to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday night. The Canaries jumped on the board first. Trevor Lawhorn led off the bottom of the second with a double to left-center field. After Adam Cowart retired the next two hitters, Joe Dempsey singled to left field to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead.
The Canaries broke the game open in the fourth. Patrick Reilly tripled to right field with one out which was followed by a two-run home run by J.D. Reininger. After an error by Josh Horn that allowed Joe Dempsey to reach first, Joe Anthonsen singled up the middle to mvoe Dempsey to third base. Tim Hutting came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Dempsey and make it 4-0. Cody Haerther singled Anthonsen to the plate for the final run of the inning.
The Wingnuts finally cracked Canaries' starter Noel Baca in the sixth when Michael Thompson homered to left field to start the inning. After putting runners on first and third, Dustan Mohr hit a deep drive to center field that was run down by Beau Torbert to end the inning.
In the seventh, Joe Muich hit the Wingnuts' second home run of the night, a two-run shot to left off of Pat Mahomes to make it 5-3 Sioux Falls.
The Wingnuts pulled within one run in the top of the eighth. Greg Porter singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout by Dustan Mohr. Kelly Hunt followed with a groundball single through the left side that scored Porter and made it a 5-4 game.
Aaron Cotter worked the final out in the eighth with the tying and go-ahead runs on before throwing a perfect ninth to earn the save.
Adam Cowart took the loss for Wichita, allowing five runs, three earned, in six innings of work. Greg Porter extended his hitting streak to 11 games in a row.
The Wingnuts and Canaries finish their series Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. with Will Savage matching up against lefty Jino Gonzalez.
