CANARIES RALLY FOR NINTH INNING WIN
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (8-15) rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to get a 4-3 win over the Wichita Wingnuts (10-13) on Sunday afternoon at the Birdcage. The win came on a game-ending, two-run single by Tim Hutting.
Wichita took the lead in the top of the third. The bases were loaded by the Wingnuts on a walk by Michael Thompson and singles for Josh Horn and Nick Blasi. With two outs, Dustan Mohr singled through the left side to bring home both Thompson and Horn. Mohr's single put the Wingnuts up, 2-0.
The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Beau Torbert hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, to halve the Wichita lead, 2-1.
Wichita added a run in the top of the eighth inning. Greg Porter doubled to start the inning. As Porter took off for third base, Mohr singled through the hole vacated as third baseman Trevor Lawhorn went to go cover the bag. Porter scored on the hit, and Mohr's third RBI of the game gave the Wingnuts a 3-1 advantage.
The Birds then rallied in the ninth inning. J.D. Reininger and Joe Dempsey walked to set the stage. With the Wingnuts putting the wheel play on against the bunt, Joe Anthonsen swung away at the plate and hit a single up the middle. A throwing error on Wichita shortstop Josh Horn, his third error of the game, allowed Reininger to score and put Anthonsen and Dempsey on second and third for Hutting. Hutting provided the game-winning single to score both runners for the 4-3.
Jino Gonzalez pitched well for the Canaries, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Jino settled for no decision while the win went to former Wingnuts closer Amad Stephens (3-0). Stephens pitched the final two innings for the Canaries, giving up one run on two hits. Current Wingnuts closer Joe D'Alessandro (0-1) took the loss, as he allowed three runs, two earned, in the ninth inning without recording an out.
The Canaries will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday night when they host Sioux City at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday's game will feature a "Two-For-One Ticket Stimulus Package" at the box office.
