Evers Bobblehead, Local Ballplayer Highlight ValleyCats Upcoming Series
July 18, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats will be giving away bobbleheads of baseball Hall of Famer and Troy native Johnny Evers on Monday, July 21 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium as part of Capital Region Baseball Heritage Night.
The first 1,500 fans will receive the bobblehead of Evers, who began his career as a member of the Troy Trojans professional baseball club, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.
Evers is well known for being part of the double play combination known as "Tinker to Evers to Chance," which later became a part of a famous poem. He won four pennants with the Cubs, and was a part of the "Miracle" Boston Braves team of 1914, also being voted the Most Valuable Player in the National League that year.
The 21st would have been Evers' 133rd birthday, and this year also marks the 75th anniversary of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown -- as well as the 100th anniversary of the 1914 Miracle Braves, with whom Evers was captain.
The Capital Region Heritage Series has included bobbleheads of former ValleyCats Hunter Pence and Ben Zobrist, as well as former Albany-Colonie Yankees Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.
The game on the 21st caps off a three-game homestand in which the ValleyCats play host to the State College Spikes, an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The ValleyCats topped the Spikes last season in the championship series of the New York-Penn League.
Colonie High School graduate Brian O'Keefe is the starting catcher for the Spikes and returns to the Capital Region to play in front of his hometown fans.
The St. Joseph's (PA) product was a seventh round pick in this year's MLB draft.
The three-game series begins on Saturday, July 19 with Star Wars Night, presented by Eddy Daybreak, with postgame fireworks presented by Price Chopper. On Sunday, July 20, it's SouthPaw's Birthday Bash at "The Joe," with a special jersey auction benefiting the American Cancer Society.
