
State College Rallies To Take Series Finale 6-3 Over Lake Monsters On Friday

BURLINGTON, VT --- State College scored three runs on four hits, including three doubles, to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning and Rowan Wick smacked a two-run homer in the fifth inning for his New York-Penn League leading 14th home run of the season to lead the Spikes to a 6-3 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Friday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Spikes jumped out to a 1-0 in the first on a Darren Seferina leadoff triple and Robelys Reyes sacrifice fly, but Vermont scored twice on four hits in the bottom of the inning. Brett Vertigan doubled with one out down the rightfield line and scored on a Max Kuhn RBI single to rightfield to tie the game 1-1. After a Joe Bennie infield single and foul pop out, Trent Gilbert lined an RBI single to center to plate Kuhn with the second run.
Vermont increased the advantage to 3-1 in the third as Bennie lined a single to left with one out, advanced to second on an error and scored on Gilbert's second RBI single of the night. The Lake Monsters collected seven hits over the first three innings, but were held to just one hit (a Ryan Huck two-out ground-rule double in the eighth) over the final six innings. Spikes starter Will Anderson (4-1) settled down after the Gilbert RBI single in the third to retire 10 of the final 11 batters he faced to pick up the victory.
State College took the lead in the fourth as Alex De Leon led off with a double and scored on a one-out RBI double by Nick Thompson, who scored on a Ronnierd Garcia RBI double to tie the game 3-3. Collin Radack followed with an RBI groundball single down the leftfield line to plate Garcia with the go ahead run. The left-handed hitting Wick's two-run homer to deep rightcenter came off Vermont starter Jerad Grundy, giving Wick his first home run of the season off a left-handed pitcher after 13 homers off right-handers.
Gilbert and Bennie both had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Grundy (0-4) was charged with six runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss.De Leon, Radack and Jake Stone each had two hits for the Spikes, while reliever Kyle Grana had five strikeouts in two scoreless innings and Joe Scanio a perfect ninth inning for his third save. With the victory, State College has won seven of its last eight games to improve its Pinckney Division-leading record to 25-9 overall.
The homestand continues for Vermont another 25-9 team comes to Centennial Field as the Lake Monsters host the McNamara Division-leading Hudson Valley Renegades, who have won eight of their last 10 games. The series begins on Saturday at 6:05 pm as the Lake Monsters host "Warriors In Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark sponsored by New England Ford Dealers.
