Florida Everblades News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Florida Everblades (17-7-0) used 31 saves by goaltender David Shantz and a pair of third period goals to earn their season-high fifth straight win with a 3-1 effort over the South Carolina Stingrays (12-11-2) on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in front of a crowd of 5,240.
The Everblades tallied the lone first period goal in the contest to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first 20 minutes. Mike Angelidis collected his eighth goal of the season at 11:44 of the period backhanding a rebound past Stingrays goalie Daren Machesney from the left circle. Brett Peterson picked up the lone assist on the goal.
After a scoreless second period, the teams combined for three goals in the third period. The Everblades tallied first in the final frame to open some breathing room when Reggie Berg intercepted a pass behind the South Carolina net and passed it out in front to Dustin Johner who lasered a shot into the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead at 8:05. The Stingrays however answered with a power play goal when T.J. McElroy's blast from the high slot beat Shantz between the pads at 13:39 to trim the Florida lead to one.
The Stingrays continued to add pressure, including in the final 90 seconds with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, but couldn't find a way to tally the equalizer before Berg buried the insurance goal into the empty net with one second remaining in regulation for his 10th goal of the season. Ryan Brindley and added the lone assist on the goal.
Shantz picked up his fourth straight win with his 31 saves to raise his overall record to 9-2-0, and Machesney suffered the tough-luck loss allowing two goals on 24 shots, dropping his record to 2-5-0. On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 0-for-4, while the Stingrays finished the night 1-for-4.
