Frederick Keys News Release
All in all, it was a memorable night for the Frederick Keys. Facing a future hall-of-famer in rehabbing Washington Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez, the Keys still managed to pull of its sixth consecutive victory, upending Potomac 3-1 in the series opener from Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA. The win, coinciding with Wilmington's 5-0 blanking of Kinston, puts the Keys magic number at five for the first half pennant in the north.
Rodriguez, who made his big league debut when Keys CF Xavier Avery was one year old, went 0-for-3 but reached on a fielding error in six innings of play. He will head to Washington to catch the much ballyhooed debut of pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg Tuesday night.
Zagone did not let the presence of Rodriguez fluster him as he allowed just two hits in six strong inning s of work. Frederick scored in three consecutive innings to gain a 3-0 lead. In the second inning 3B Buck Britton provided a two-out RBI-single to put the Keys atop, 1-0. It was CF Kyle Hudson to do the trick with a two-out RBI single for the Keys third run in the fourth inning.
The stellar crowd of 4,110 came to life in the fifth inning when Rodriguez came to bat with two on and two out. Zagone remained poised, enticing a fly ball to right field to get out of the inning with his shutout still intact.
RHP's Sean Gleason and Jose Diaz combined for three scoreless innings to close the door on Potomac; for Diaz, a scoreless ninth inning provided his eighth save.
The series continues Tuesday, June 8th at 7:03 p.m. as the Keys will send Ryan Berry to the hill looking for a seventh consecutive win. Coverage begins on The Keys Baseball Network at 6:40 p.m.
Frederick will return home for a four-game weekend series beginning Thursday, June 10th at 7:00 p.m. against the Salem Red Sox. For tickets, contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
