Winston-Salem Dash News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JUNE 7, 2010) - For the third straight game, the Winston-Salem Dash witnessed a walk-off victory. Unfortunately for Joe McEwing's club, the Dash was on the losing end this time, as L.V. Ware's chopper to the shortstop scored Matt Kennelly from third base, sending Myrtle Beach to a 4-3 walk-off win on Monday night. The Pelicans took the first game of the three-game series and ended Winston's four-game win streak.

The Dash's lead in the Southern Division was cut to four games over Salem, as the Red Sox rallied for a walk-off win of their own against Lynchburg on Monday.

Both starters pitched very well in the early going, and the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. Jesus Sucre hit a two-run double off Nate Jones to give Myrtle Beach (20-38) a 2-0 lead.

The Dash (38-20) responded in the top of the sixth against Brett Oberholtzer. Jon Gilmore tripled to right and scored when Seth Loman hit a two-run home run to right field. It was Loman's league-leading 14th homer of the season and his first against a left-handed pitcher.

Oberholtzer did not throw another pitch after the home run, as he was removed by the Pelicans medical staff with an injury that was not obvious to the casual eye. He did not get a decision after throwing five-plus innings and allowing two runs on seven hits.

The Pelicans did not wait long to re-establish their lead, as Mike Jones hit an RBI double off Nate Jones with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The right-hander was able to work through the rest of the sixth and the seventh innings without allowing a run. He departed after seven innings and did not receive a decision. Jones gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts over seven innings and bounced back from his worst start of the season last time out at Potomac.

Winston-Salem tied the game in the eighth inning after Loman tripled and scored on Kenny Williams, Jr.'s RBI double.

After working a scoreless eighth, Leroy Hunt came back out for the Dash in the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, Kennelly grounded a ball to third base. Gilmore's long throw to first skipped past Loman and into the Pelicans dugout for a two-base error, which was charged to Loman. Hunt walked Luis Sumoza, but his final pitch went to the backstop and allowed Kennelly to reach third base.

With the infield playing halfway, Ware hit a high chopper to the left side. Eduardo Escobar fielded the ball and threw homeward, but Kennelly slid into the plate ahead of the throw to end the ballgame and give Myrtle Beach the win.

Hunt (0-3) had one of his better outings of the season, but was charged with the loss after surrendering the ninth inning unearned run.

Yeliar Castro (3-2) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for the victory.

Winston-Salem had won its previous two ballgames in walk-off fashion at BB&T Ballpark and had won three straight one-run games before Monday night.

For the second game in a row, the Dash was plagued by poor clutch hitting. The team left 11 men on base a day after stranding 15 in Sunday's win. Winston-Salem was 5 for 22 when batting with men on base.

Seth Loman was the bright spot for the Dash, finishing 3 for 4 with a single, a triple, a home run, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored. He finished the game a double short of hitting for the cycle.

The Dash looks to even the three-game set on Tuesday when LHP Charlie Leesman (7-1, 4.94) goes for his league-leading eighth win of the season against RHP J.J. Hoover (3-3, 3.48). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and fans can tune into the audio webcast beginning at 6:45.
