Hill City Howlers News Release
For the second straight game Lynchburg let go of a late lead as they dropped the series opener 5-4 at Salem. The Hillcats have now matched their longest losing skid of the season with five straight setbacks.
Lynchburg got on the board first thanks to a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning by Alex Buchholz. Salem responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on an RBI sacrifice fly by Oscar Tejeda.
The Hillcats recaptured the lead in the third inning at 2-1. Kyle Day hit his first triple of the season to start the frame and Cody Puckett drove him in with a sacrifice fly. The Red Sox answered again though in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at two. Will Middlebrooks hit a solo homer out to left-center to draw the Sox even.
In the top of the sixth inning the Cats plated a pair to take their third lead of the evening. Kyle Day brought in the go-ahead run with an RBI sacrifice fly and Miguel Rojas tacked on to the Lynchburg lead with a two-out RBI single to make it a 4-2 game.
That lead would not hold up though as the Red Sox plated three in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the walk-off win. Will Middlebrooks chopped an infield single to plate the first run, Tim Federowicz brought in the tying run with a fielder's choice and Alex Hassan gave the Sox the win with the game-winning RBI base-hit.
It marked the first time all season Lynchburg has lost when leading after eight innings (17-0) and the Hillcats have now matched their longest losing streak of the season with five straight defeats.
The blown save and the loss went to Justin Freeman (1-2) for Lynchburg (24-34) and the win went to Michael Lee (4-3) for Salem (34-24). Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Right-hander Curtis Partch (2-4, 3.91) for the Hillcats opposite and Fabian Williamson (4-3, 4.03) for the Red Sox. Tune-in for all the live action on 105.5 FM KD Country.
